Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages by means of artwork. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the home of a member on the jury. In the course of her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
